In March 2007, for the first time in history, hand surgeons and hand therapists met at the same time, during the Joint Congress of the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand and International Federation of Societies of Hand Therapists in Sydney.
More than 2,000 visitors came to Sydney for the five-day congress and business meeting at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, which included more than 750 live scientific presentations, poster sessions and a trade exhibition of more than 40 stands.
Sydney won the bid to host the conference following a gruelling nine-year process against stiff competition from the UK, South Korea, the US and a joint bid by Argentina and Brazil.
Event convener and Australian surgeon Dr Roland Hicks credited Business Events Sydney (BESydney) with Sydney’s win. “If we didn’t have [BESydney], we wouldn’t have won the bid, it’s as simple as that,” he said.
“It took a professional bid to overcome regional politics and bring the event to Australia.”
